Specialty Coffee Kenya Ab Asali [February Coffee of the Month]

KENYA AB Asali, our coffee of the month for February, is a cup that leaves a lasting impression with its sweetness and balanced flavor. In the sensory profile, you can distinctly taste the notes of sun-kissed peaches, summer blueberries, and juicy red oranges, balanced by a pleasant, subtle hazelnut aftertaste. Espresso from Kenya? Absolutely, we’ve got that for you. But don’t worry, we’ve also roasted these extraordinary beans for pour-over. Try both versions, it’s worth it!

Kenya AB Asali

Kenya AB Asali comes from the Tambaya coffee factory, located by the Gura River, about 7 km from Mukurwe-ini. The coffee trees grown in this region thrive in one of the most favorable climatic conditions for coffee cultivation, at an altitude that provides a cooler climate, ideal for developing complex flavors in coffee.

Growing Region – Central Highlands

Throughout the Central Highland Range, which includes the Aberdare, Nanyuki, Nyahururu, Nyeri, and Mount Kenya mountains, the SL34 and SL28 varieties dominate, making up nearly 90% of the coffee cultivated. These varieties, along with historical varieties such as Bourbon and Kent, are commonly found in Kenya. Modern varieties like Ruiru and Batian are also gaining popularity.

These mountains are part of the Great Rift Valley, which stretches over about 6,000 km from Lebanon to Mozambique. The altitude at which the coffee trees grow, combined with the exceptionally mineral-rich soil, creates ideal conditions for coffee cultivation as well as other crops such as tea, maize, and dairy.

Coffee Processing

The coffee cherries are hand-picked when fully ripe. The cherries are taken to the wet mill on the same day to prevent uncontrolled fermentation. At the mill, the cherries are sorted again and undergo full processing, using water from the nearby river.

After processing, the coffee is placed in special water tanks for 8 to 16 hours. This process helps achieve clarity in the cup and the right level of acidity. After drying the beans, cuppers sort them by size, ensuring consistency and high quality.

Coffee Characteristics

Kenya AB Asali is characterized by exceptional flavor clarity and balanced acidity, resulting from the precise processing method and ideal growing conditions. In the cup, you can experience intense fruity, citrusy notes, along with a subtle tea-like delicacy.
