Information about the Farm and Process
The Marumi Farmers Cooperative Society operates three factories: Marumi, Iriguini, and Mariira, which process coffee cherries from around 1,500 small-scale farmers in total. The Marumi factory, where our September beans come from, is located south of Mount Kenya, near the foothills of the Aberdare mountain range. Founded in 1979, the cooperative currently has about 650 members, among the estimated three-quarters of a million people living within the county boundaries.
In Kenya, smallholder farming is very common. Washing stations are conveniently located in the areas between farms to be easily accessible for all. Individual farms often operate under a cooperative management system, allowing members to jointly care for their crops and support one another. This enables them to use equipment that would otherwise be unattainable for any individual farmer. This has a significant impact on the quality of their work and the final product.
