Sweet and juicy, smooth in texture, and clean in taste—this is how BOLIVIA Yuira, our new filter coffee option, presents itself. In its profile, you’ll detect the sweetness of dried apples and summer grapes, along with intensely juicy citrus notes—sweet oranges and tart white grapefruits.

Carmelo Yuira is a leading coffee producer in the Caranavi region. Around him, a new community of producers is emerging, focused on producing premium quality coffee. The Senda Salvaje farm features dark, nutrient-rich soil, ideal for growing coffee plants. Nearby is the family home of Mr. Carmelo, and across the street is a café run by his wife and daughter. The Yuira family home also houses a room with a sample roaster and a large stockpile of green beans awaiting roasting.

What does the host say about his love for coffee? “We worked as quality managers at Cup of Excellence over a decade ago. We had the opportunity to taste many wonderful coffees from various producers and started thinking that one day we’d like to produce our own coffee. When I brought samples from different production areas to the headquarters for analysis, I noticed that the coffee from a certain elderly woman’s farm was of excellent quality. The elderly woman was too old to run the farm, so we paid a fair price so she could live comfortably, and we bought her land. We were confident that coffee from her farm would certainly rank highly in competitions” (from an interview with Typica Coffee).

* Coffee production in Bolivia has always been relatively low. It peaked in 1990, when the country exported as many as 125,000 bags, but it gradually began to decline. In recent years, it has fallen even further to a catastrophically low level of 22,000 bags per year in 2020. Several factors contribute to this decline, but the most significant is that coffee competes with the local coca industry. The so-called Erythroxylum coca is cultivated for the drug trade, yielding harvests year-round, and is easier to collect, often bringing farmers much higher profits. In the long term, coca plantations have a devastating impact on communities and the land; pristine rainforests are often illegally destroyed to plant Erythroxylum coca, and the lack of shade trees leads to significant soil erosion problems in the region. Excessive use of biocides by coca producers to boost crops renders the soil completely infertile over time. The land is then abandoned as it is no longer suitable for any crops.
