The Ventura family has been growing coffee for over five generations. This family tradition began in 1894 when their grandfather started growing coffee at Finca Rabanales. More than a century later, in 2012, the Venturas purchased Finca El Duranzo, which is now co-owned by five family members.

Farm Information

When the Venturas acquired Finca El Duranzo in 2012, there wasn’t a single coffee plantation on the land—it was primarily used for forestry. Although the Ventura family has been cultivating coffee for over 120 years, El Duranzo is a relatively new player in the coffee industry. Coffee was planted there in 2013–2014, with the first regular harvest occurring in 2018. The changing climate has been challenging, as plant stress caused by difficult conditions has resulted in lower yields.

When asked about the differences he noticed at Finca El Duranzo compared to other family farms, Rafael, one of the owners, said he had to forget everything he knew about coffee and start from scratch. Rafael explained that what he loves about coffee is that working with it means constant growth and endless opportunities to learn.

About the Region

Since the 1950s, most coffee produced in Nuevo Oriente has been grown by smallholder farmers. The region is renowned for its favorable climate and volcanic soil rich in minerals. Over the past few decades, these conditions have helped Guatemala become a recognized producer of specialty coffee.
