Genmaicha – green tea with a touch of legend
Genmaicha (玄米茶) is more than just tea. It is a story in a cup – with a taste that you remember long after your last sip. Its sweet and nutty aroma and characteristic, slightly rusty infusion have accompanied meals in sushi bars and Japanese homes for generations. In the past, it was an everyday drink – a mixture of green sencha and roasted rice, which was supposed to “stretch” the precious tea leaves.
Today, it is affectionately called popcorn tea and valued for its unique taste, low caffeine level and gentle effect on digestion. According to legend, it all started by accident – when stolen grains of rice ended up in the shogun’s tea cup. Although the servant paid for this mistake with his life, the shogun himself was so delighted with the new infusion that he made it part of his daily ritual.
Genmaicha properties – harmony of taste and health
Moya Genmaicha is a unique combination of organic Japanese sencha and roasted brown rice from certified crops. Before the rice goes into the tea, it goes through a process of soaking, cooking and gently roasting - to extract the deep, sweet and nutty aroma in the cup, for which Genmaicha is famous.
This tea has a moderate caffeine content, so it is perfect at any time of day. In Japan, it traditionally accompanies meals, gently supporting digestion. Its properties have also been appreciated for centuries by Buddhist monks - they drink Genmaicha during long periods of fasting, when they need inner balance and focus.
