Rooibos tea is a type of tea that is still not very popular. While almost everyone has heard of Yerba mate or Matcha, this variety unfortunately remains quite anonymous, and also has fantastic health-promoting properties. Fortunately, its popularity is gradually increasing - more and more people, especially in the West, reach for rooibos and appreciate its beneficial effects on the body and taste.

Rooibos, also known as "Redbush," is a plant native to South Africa. It grows only in a small, mountainous region of the continent, and attempts to cultivate it in other parts of the world have generally been unsuccessful. Interestingly, a single bush typically yields only 100-200 grams of dried leaves and tops of stems. Although the brew made from this plant is commonly referred to as tea, it is not actually related to the traditional tea plant.

Research on this plant is still relatively young, but it has already been proven that it is rich in antioxidants, which help combat excess free radicals. In fact, it contains even more antioxidants than green tea. This is very important because a high level of free radicals in the body significantly increases the risk of chronic diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, atherosclerosis, and coronary artery disease. Another valuable active ingredient in rooibos is aspalathin, which is not only an antioxidant but also has the ability to lower blood glucose levels and improve glucose tolerance. It has also been confirmed that this type of tea contains very few tannins, which positively affects iron metabolism in the body. Numerous studies on this shrub are still ongoing, but its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties have already been noted. Additionally, the positive effects of this brew on lipid metabolism suggest that drinking rooibos is a good idea during weight loss periods, as it may help support this process.

Rooibos tea is relatively sweet and refreshing. It has distinct woody and nutty notes. Therefore, apart from its wonderful health-promoting properties, this infusion can be appreciated for its taste alone. The rooibos brew is typically enjoyed hot, but you can also let it cool down and serve it chilled with ice and lemon. An important feature of rooibos is its lack of caffeine, meaning it won't have the stimulating effect of coffee or black tea.
