  • What is whole bean coffee?

Whole bean coffee is coffee in its most natural form after roasting — whole beans, unground. Before it reaches your cup, it travels a long way: it ripens as a coffee cherry, is harvested, processed (natural, washed, or honey), and then roasted at over 200°C, a process that unlocks hundreds of aromatic compounds.

Unlike pre-ground coffee, whole bean keeps its aromas locked inside the bean's structure — they are released only at the moment of grinding. This makes it significantly fresher and more aromatic than ready-ground blends. Compared to capsules, it gives complete freedom — to experiment with grind size, dose, and brewing method, finding a new dimension in the same coffee every morning.

  • What makes whole bean coffee stand out?

Whole bean coffee is, above all, a matter of quality and freshness. Aromas sealed inside the bean remain intact until the moment of grinding — which is why every cup smells and tastes the way it should: intense, layered, with character.

There is also something that cannot be measured — the ritual. The smell of freshly ground coffee, the sound of the machine, a moment of focus before the first sip. Brewing whole bean coffee turns a morning routine into a small ceremony that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

It is worth adding that whole bean coffee is generally better value than capsules, and choosing it also means less packaging waste. Good taste and a clear conscience — they rarely come together this naturally.

  • Types of whole bean coffee

At JAVA Coffee Roasters, arabica leads - and that is deliberate. In the hands of a skilled roaster, it can surprise with fruitiness, floral character, and depth that other varieties simply cannot match. We value it for its complex aroma, natural acidity, and distinctive flavour. Our range covers beans for filter, espresso, and pour-over brewing. You will also find whole bean decaffeinated coffee, as well as syrups and plant-based drinks in our shop.

Arabica is not the only variety available — here is a quick overview:

    • Arabica — delicate, fruity, floral with natural acidity and a complex aroma.
    • Robusta — strong, earthy, with a pronounced bitterness.
    • BlendA — mix of varieties: balanced flavour, consistency, full body.
    • Single origin — one source, one terroir. For those seeking unique flavour profiles.

  • Roast level — how does it affect flavour?

Roasting is the heart of coffee. Lighter roasts bring more acidity and fruitiness — darker roasts shift toward bitterness, smokiness, and chocolate. Choose based on what you want in your cup:

  • Which whole bean coffee should you choose?

Not every bean works in every machine. For automatic (bean-to-cup) espresso machines, blends and darker roasts perform best — they produce creamy espresso with a dense crema. For drip, V60, or AeroPress, light and medium-roasted single origins are ideal — filter methods bring out their complex fruity and floral aromas. French press favours oily beans and a coarser grind.

If you are unsure which whole bean coffee to choose, JAVA Coffee Roasters offers courses and workshops covering the differences between arabica and robusta, coffee processing methods, what specialty coffee is, how to read coffee labels, and how to keep beans fresh.

If you are unsure which whole bean coffee to choose, JAVA University runs training courses covering the differences between arabica and robusta, processing methods, what specialty coffee is, how to read coffee labels, and how to keep beans fresh.

  • Where does our coffee come from?

The flavour of coffee begins long before roasting — in the soil, the climate, and the altitude at which the plant grows. That is why JAVA Coffee Roasters sources beans from regions that have set the standard for world coffee for decades. Our whole bean coffees come from, among others:

    • Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee — wild-growing coffee trees and a cultivation tradition spanning centuries. Beans from the Yirgacheffe region are known for their intense floral aroma and citrus acidity: bergamot, jasmine, lemon. Coffees from Sidama and Harrar lean toward a fruity, berry-forward profile with a velvety sweetness.
    • Colombia. One of the most recognised origins on the world coffee map. Beans from Valle del Cauca and Huila offer a classic arabica profile: cherry, red apple, gentle acidity, and a light caramel sweetness. Balanced, clean, consistent — coffee that rarely disappoints.
    • Brazil. The world's largest coffee producer and the country where natural processing has been perfected. Beans from Minas Gerais and São Paulo deliver full body, low acidity, and a flavour profile built on chocolate, hazelnuts, and brown sugar. An excellent blend base — adding depth and creaminess.
    • Guatemala. Guatemalan coffees are defined by character. Volcanic soil and cool nights in the Huehuetenango and Antigua regions give the beans a distinct apple-plum acidity, dark chocolate, and a light smoky finish. These coffees stand out for their complexity and intensity.
    • Kenya. Kenya is among the most prized origins in the specialty coffee world. Beans from the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Nyeri region carry a vivid, wine-like acidity, a profile of redcurrant and blackcurrant, and a long, fruit-forward finish. Kenyan coffees are genuinely expressive.
    • Costa Rica. The first country in the world to legally ban robusta cultivation — only arabica grows here. Beans from Tarrazú and Tres Ríos offer clean, bright, and sweet profiles: peach, apricot, honey, with a gentle acidity and creamy body. Costa Rican coffees are defined by clarity and elegance.

  • Freshness, grinding, and storage

Freshly roasted coffee tastes best between day 7 and day 30 after the roast date — this is the degassing window. Pay attention to the roast date on the packaging, not just the best-before date. Store beans in an airtight, opaque container, away from light and moisture. Avoid freezing beans unless you are storing them long-term — condensation each time the container is opened degrades the bean's structure.

  • Frequently asked questions about whole bean coffee

Is whole bean coffee better than pre-ground?

Whole bean coffee retains its freshness and aroma for longer. Grinding just before brewing allows more flavour to develop and lets you match the grind size precisely to your brewing method.

Which whole bean coffee is best for an automatic espresso machine?

Blends of arabica with robusta, or darker-roasted arabica beans, work best in automatic machines — they produce creamy espresso with a dense crema. Very light single origins can result in over-acidity under pressure extraction. At JAVA Coffee, you can order beans ground for espresso, or ask us to recommend something suited to your specific machine.

Where in Warsaw can I buy whole bean coffee?

The JAVA Coffee Roasters physical store is in Warsaw — you can choose your coffee in person, experience the aromas, and consult with our team. If you are not in Warsaw, order through the online shop — we ship freshly roasted whole bean coffee across Poland.

How long can whole bean coffee be stored?

Whole bean coffee holds its full aroma for approximately 4–6 weeks from the roast date, stored in an airtight, opaque container away from light and moisture. The roast date on the packaging is a more reliable freshness indicator than the best-before date. Buying in smaller quantities more frequently is better than stocking up in bulk.

Can I order whole bean coffee pre-ground at JAVA Coffee?

Yes — at JAVA Coffee Roasters you can order your beans ground for a specific brewing method: espresso, filter, French press, or AeroPress. Simply select the appropriate option when placing your order. If you do not yet have a grinder, this is a practical way to enjoy the quality of whole bean coffee without additional equipment.

What is the difference between specialty whole bean coffee and regular whole bean coffee?

Specialty coffee refers to beans that have scored at least 80 points on the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) international grading scale. This means a strictly controlled process — from cultivation and harvest through processing to roasting. Specialty coffees are defined by an exceptional flavour profile, cup clarity, and the absence of defects. JAVA Coffee carries a wide selection of specialty coffees from around the world.
