Tanzania Itumpi comes from the Songwe region in southwestern Tanzania, specifically the Mbozi District. Coffee cherries grow at elevations of 1,500–1,700 metres above sea level, where the N39 and KT423 varieties thrive. Known for their bright acidity and excellent cup quality, these varieties benefit from cool nights, fertile clay loam soils, and a slow ripening process that allows the beans to develop natural sweetness, complexity, and exceptional clarity.

While Tanzania is often overshadowed by more widely recognised African coffee origins, regions like Songwe continue to demonstrate the country's remarkable potential. The coffees produced here are balanced, refined, and expressive—offering a clean, elegant cup that truly reflects the unique terroir of the region.

Coffee plantations in the Songwe region, Tanzania

Tanzania Itumpi is produced by Itumpi AMCOS, a coffee cooperative established in the 1970s that today brings together around 160 smallholder farmers. Over the years, the cooperative has continuously improved both cultivation and processing practices. Since 2019, it has placed a strong focus on Fully Washed coffees, a processing method that highlights the clarity, balance, and unique character of each harvest.

After harvesting, ripe coffee cherries are delivered to the washing station, where they are depulped, fermented for approximately 8–10 hours, thoroughly washed, and then dried on raised African beds for 7–10 days. This careful process produces a remarkably clean and elegant cup with vibrant fruit notes, delicate tea-like nuances, and a long, balanced finish.

Tanzania Itumpi is a coffee defined by balance and elegance. The cup opens with bright notes of rhubarb, bringing a lively, refreshing acidity. Layers of blackcurrant follow, adding depth and vibrant fruit character, while delicate tea-like notes create a clean, refined finish that gives the coffee its signature lightness and clarity.

Silky in texture with a natural sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar and honey, this coffee is beautifully balanced from start to finish. Its fruit-forward profile never overwhelms, allowing each flavour to shine in harmony. The result is a long, clean finish with lingering fruity notes that invite another sip.
