AeroPress is one of the most popular coffee brewing methods, appreciated for its simplicity, speed, and endless possibilities for experimenting with flavor. By combining immersion brewing with gentle pressure, it extracts the full aroma from coffee beans while maintaining clarity and balance in the cup. The advantages of AeroPress make it a favorite method among both home coffee lovers and specialty baristas.

AeroPress owes much of its popularity to its simplicity. Preparing great coffee with this device takes only a few minutes, a small amount of freshly ground beans, and hot water. Brewing with an AeroPress is quick and intuitive, requires no complicated equipment, and is very easy to clean up afterwards.

Another great advantage of AeroPress is the freedom to experiment. By changing the coffee-to-water ratio, brewing time, or preparation method (such as the classic or inverted method), you can discover slightly different flavor notes in the same beans each time.

It is no surprise that a whole community of coffee enthusiasts has formed around this method. Since 2008, the World AeroPress Championship has been held around the world, where baristas compete to create the best AeroPress brewing recipe.

AeroPress offers a lot of brewing flexibility, allowing you to experiment with different types of coffee. However, certain characteristics of beans work particularly well with this method and help bring out the full aroma and a clean, well-balanced cup.

Roast level

Light or medium roast coffees are most commonly recommended for AeroPress. In practice, however, darker roasts can also work well. The key is to choose freshly roasted beans, including those available through the JAVA Coffee Roasters subscription. 

Such beans best highlight the natural character of coffee – its fruity notes, delicate acidity, and natural sweetness.

Each coffee is shipped within 10 days of roasting, ensuring the beans retain their rich flavor and aroma.

For AeroPress, a medium-fine grind works best – somewhere between the grind used for drip coffee and espresso.

This grind size allows proper extraction during the short brewing time and helps produce a cup with an intense aroma and balanced flavor.

AeroPress highlights the character of specialty coffees beautifully, so it’s worth paying attention to the flavor profile of the beans.

• If you enjoy light, fresh, aromatic brews, choose coffees from Africa, such as Ethiopia or Kenya. In AeroPress they often reveal notes of citrus, berries, or delicate floral aromas. The cup will be bright, juicy, and highly aromatic.
• If you prefer a more classic, sweeter taste, coffees from Honduras are a great choice. In the cup you’ll often find notes of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, and nuts, with a fuller, creamier body.
• If you’re looking for a more complex flavor profile, try beans from Mexico or Myanmar. These coffees often combine sweetness, gentle fruitiness, and subtle spice notes, creating a balanced and intriguing cup. AeroPress is excellent at highlighting these subtle differences between coffees.

Brewing coffee with an AeroPress is quick and simple, while still allowing plenty of room for experimentation.

Follow these steps to prepare a clean and aromatic cup:

1. Grind the coffee medium-fine – the texture should resemble fine sugar.
2. Add about 14–18 g of coffee to the AeroPress chamber.
3. Pour water at 80–90°C over the coffee and gently stir.
4. Let it brew for about 60–90 seconds to allow the coffee to release its aroma.
5. Slowly press the plunger, pushing the brew through the filter into your cup.

The most common ratio is 14–18 g of coffee per 200 ml of water, but you can easily adjust it to your taste. By changing the coffee amount, brewing time, or water temperature, you can discover new flavor notes in your favorite beans.
