What makes coffee for French Press special?

Coffee for French Press should always be of the highest quality, as it significantly affects the brewing process and allows you to achieve a brew with the right taste and aroma. At our roastery, JAVA Coffee Roasters, we particularly recommend 100% Arabica specialty products, which you can find in our rich selection available in our online store. The French Press is an exceptionally popular device with a history dating back to the early 20th century. This device originates from France but is particularly popular in the UK and Scandinavian countries.

Using a plunger coffee maker

The French Press has become a very popular method of coffee preparation, especially in home settings. French presses operate on a simple mechanism while delivering exceptionally interesting results. The device consists of a metal or glass cylinder, with a key component being the plunger with a mesh filter that fits snugly against the sides. Typically, the French Press also includes a lid that is on the same axis as the plunger. Due to its simple construction, this plunger coffee maker is exceptionally easy to use. Besides freshly filtered hot water at about 90 degrees Celsius and good-quality coffee, useful tools for preparing a brew with a French Press include a grinder, timer, or scale. You can find many accessories for brewing delicious and aromatic coffee in our collection.

How it works

Brewing coffee with a plunger coffee maker requires careful proportioning. Initially, it is best to use the standard 60 g of coffee per 1 liter of water, depending on the capacity of the device. The coffee should be coarsely ground, as too fine a grind increases the risk of clogging the mesh and negatively affecting the taste of the brew. After adding the grounds to the vessel and pouring hot water, cover the brew. After stirring and letting it sit for about half a minute, pour in the remaining water and stir again. At this stage, do not press the plunger yet, but let the brew steep for about 3-4 minutes. After this time, you can remove the lid and skim off the coffee grounds from the surface with a spoon. Finally, press the plunger to the bottom, preferably in a calm and steady motion. The coffee is then ready - just pour it into cups and enjoy the aromatic flavor of the brew.

Quality of the French press

Choosing the right specialty coffee is already half the success, but the brewing device itself should also be of high quality. The materials used in its production are crucial. Models made of plastics can impart an unpleasant taste to the brewed coffee, especially if low-quality plastic is used. In such cases, even repeated washing or rinsing with boiling water is ineffective. Metal presses can also have issues, as they are prone to residue build-up. To avoid such problems, it is worth choosing certified products from reputable brands. You should also pay attention to the quality of the construction. The edges of the mesh at the end of the plunger should fit snugly against the sides to ensure a seal and prevent coffee grounds from passing into the brew.
