  • Types of tea

The most popular teas are black, green, white, yellow, pu-erh and oolong. The term also covers infusions containing herbs and dried fruit — such as cistus, chamomile, St John's wort, mint, raspberry, elderflower or rosehip. Blends of fruits, herbs and flowers, whether on their own or combined with tea leaves, can also create remarkably interesting compositions.

  • Tea — the world's oldest drink

Tea has a history and tradition dating back to 2737 BC. It is considered the oldest drink in the world, with its origins linked to the mythical Emperor Shennong, who brewed it for the first time by chance. According to legend, tea leaves miraculously fell into a vessel of hot water, and the rising aroma enticed the emperor. The popularisation of tea took centuries — it was not until the 16th century that it began to spread beyond the Far East. Europeans had to wait until the 17th century, and it took a further 200 years before they fell irreversibly in love with it, following the example of the British.

The flavour of tea depends on the conditions in which the leaves mature and the processes they subsequently undergo. The vast majority is grown in South-East Asia, where the climate is warm and rainfall is abundant. Plantations are typically established at altitudes above 2,000 metres. Harvesting tea is hard, manual work — only the top buds and the two leaves beneath them are picked, several to over a dozen times a year. The leaves are then heated, oxidised, dried or fermented. The names "black", "green", "red" and "white" come from the colour of the brew ultimately obtained from the steeped leaves.

  • Health properties

As well as its exceptional flavour, tea has a positive impact on health. It is rich in antioxidants, the quantity of which varies depending on the type of brew. White and green teas contain the highest levels of antioxidants and are therefore considered the most beneficial. They are associated with numerous health properties: they help cleanse the body, support metabolism, aid the digestive system and have a calming effect. They are also a rich source of vitamins A, B and E.
