For years, decaf and espresso were a strange combination.
Flat. Dull. Made just to be “caffeine-free”. This one is different. Ethiopia Bensa Bombe comes from southern Oromia — a region where altitude, cool climate and slower cherry maturation make a real difference. Around 2000 meters above sea level means denser, harder beans. And in espresso, that matters. Density gives stability. Stability gives control on the grinder, consistency in extraction and structure in the cup. This decaf wasn’t created out of necessity. It was created as a conscious choice.

Selection of ripe coffee cherries directly on farms in the Bensa region

Bensa Bombe is a region located in southern Oromia, one of Ethiopia's most prized coffee regions. Coffees from this part of the country are grown at high altitudes—1,993–2,150 meters above sea level—in a cool climate that slows fruit ripening and allows the beans to develop density and complexity.

This batch comes from approximately 650 smallholder farmers, who operate small farms averaging around 3 hectares. Local heirloom varieties, characteristic of the region and Ethiopia's coffee heritage, are cultivated here. Harvesting is done by hand, with an emphasis on selecting the ripest cherries.

After harvesting, the cherries were processed using the natural method—dried whole, with the pulp, which creates a full, sweet, and deep flavor in the coffee. Natural in Ethiopia is not an experiment or a trend, but a natural element of local tradition, today implemented in a much more controlled manner than before.

The coffee was then transported to Germany, where—in collaboration with Coffein Compagnie—it underwent decaffeination using the Sugarcane method (E.A. – Ethyl Acetate). The process begins with steaming the beans to open their structure. The next step is a bath in natural ethyl acetate, which binds and removes the caffeine (approximately 97%) without erasing the aromas. Finally, the beans are steamed again and dried.

In espresso, this coffee is dense and structured. From the first sip, the sweetness of apple jam and brown sugar emerges, building the brew's structure. Chocolate—milk rather than bitter—and ripe apricots develop within, providing a fruity warmth without aggressive acidity. The natural process works to enhance body and texture, while the high altitude of cultivation makes the beans more compact and stable during extraction. Sugarcane decaffeination doesn't erase the flavor—it's still the same Ethiopia, just without the caffeine.

The result is an espresso that retains body, sweetness, and consistency, but without the caffeine tension. You can make it in the evening. After dinner. You can offer your guest a full-fledged shot, not a "substitute option." Decaf is no longer a product of necessity—it's increasingly a conscious choice for those who limit their caffeine intake, but not their expectations of flavor.
