When we talk about a good plant-based drink for coffee, we think about taste, foaming, ingredients and consistency. Today there is one more thing to consider: formal proof of responsible business. On 18 August 2025, Sproud announced that it had received B Corp certification – one of the most demanding certifications for social and environmental impact in the world. This is important news for people who like to know what stands behind the products they buy.

B Corp in short (without the marketing)
B Corp is a certification awarded by the non-profit organisation B Lab to companies that meet high standards of social and environmental impact. Sproud was certified under the previous rules, which required a company to:
- pass verification and score at least 80 points in the B Impact Assessment, which covered five areas: environment, workers, community, customers and governance (Sproud scored 109.4 points),
- make a legal commitment to consider the interests of all stakeholders,
- publish its results on its B Corp profile and renew the certification every 3 years.
Since 2026, new companies have been certified under updated standards. Instead of a single points threshold, they must meet specific requirements in seven impact areas, including climate and human rights.
In May 2026, the B Corp community included more than 10,700 companies in 104 countries and 162 industries. The number is growing – and that is good news, because transparency is becoming the norm, not the exception.

What exactly did Sproud announce?
Sproud, a Swedish brand of plant-based drinks made from yellow peas, was verified by B Lab and joined the B Corp movement. This is not a one-time stamp. The certification confirms that the company meets strict standards and commits it to maintaining and improving them. The news was confirmed by the brand’s official press release and by industry media.
Why does it matter for your coffee?
A carbon footprint under control
Sproud calculates the climate footprint of its products with CarbonCloud and publishes the results, which are updated continuously. In November 2026, for drinks sold in Poland, they ranged from 0.24 to 0.30 kg CO₂e per kilogram of product, depending on the variant. This level of detail is rare in the plant-based drinks market.
Protein source: peas
Yellow peas naturally fix nitrogen in the soil, support biodiversity and need relatively little water. This is one of the reasons why Sproud states that its drinks have a lower carbon footprint than products from the leading plant-based drink brands (based on its own data and methodology). For us, what matters more than the claim is that the company publishes its measurements and has them verified externally.
Transparency over claims
On the Sproud website you will find not only product descriptions, but also impact reports and links to verification tools. This is a way of communicating that anyone who likes to make decisions based on facts will appreciate.

Which Sproud should you choose for coffee?
The Barista versions are the first choice for coffee with milk, because they were made for foaming. You can choose the other variants by taste.
The certification tells you what stands behind the brand. In the cup, however, something else matters: how the drink behaves with espresso and how well it foams. Sproud Barista and Sproud Barista Zero foam very well, have a creamy texture and pair perfectly with coffee – they work well in a cappuccino, latte or flat white. If you like a delicate note of vanilla in your coffee, try Sproud Vanilla. You will find all flavours in our Sproud collection.
B Corp ≠ perfection. It is a framework that makes companies do their homework
The B Corp movement also has its critics – for example, because very different companies can be certified. This is a valuable discussion, because standards must develop together with the market. B Lab updates its rules – since 2026, new, more demanding standards with minimum requirements in seven impact areas have applied – to better respond to challenges and expectations. In short: it is a living system that learns, not a one-time win that companies can rest on.
What does it mean for JAVA Coffee Roasters and for you?
- Trust in the supply chain. We work with brands that show clearly where they stand. B Corp requires companies to publish information about their actions and results – this makes conscious choices easier for us and for our customers.
- Shared values. At JAVA we believe that “GOOD COFFEE IS A HUMAN RIGHT®” – and that products also mean responsibility towards people and the planet. Sproud’s certification helps turn this into something concrete: measured impact, regular audits and continuous improvement.
- A better conversation about plant-based products. Instead of speaking in general terms, we can talk about concrete numbers (a product’s CO₂e footprint), methodology and progress year by year. This is a clear step forward in how brands talk to consumers.
What should you look for as a conscious consumer?
- Does the brand publish numbers, not just slogans? (for example, a product’s CO₂e footprint and the measurement method).
- Does an independent party verify this data? (CarbonCloud, B Lab).
- Is there continuity? B Corp requires recertification every three years – check whether companies report their progress, not only their starting result.
For the curious: Sproud’s climate footprint in numbers
Sproud calculates and verifies the climate footprint of all its products in Sweden, the United Kingdom and Poland. Example values for drinks sold in Poland (as of November 2026):
- Sproud Unsweetened: 0.24 kg CO₂e/kg,
- Sproud Vanilla: 0.26 kg CO₂e/kg,
- Sproud Barista: 0.30 kg CO₂e/kg.
The data is updated continuously, so it is best to check the values for each drink directly in the CarbonCloud reports. This is good practice, because it lets you compare products and understand where the numbers come from.
Summary
For Sproud, B Corp certification is more than a reason for congratulations. It is a framework of responsibility that makes it easier to compare claims with reality – and to talk about plant-based products with numbers, not emotions. For us at JAVA Coffee Roasters, it is another step towards coffee that tastes good and does good.
FAQ – frequently asked questions about Sproud and B Corp certification
What does B Corp certification mean for Sproud?
B Corp certification means that the way the company operates has been verified for its social and environmental impact and the quality of its governance. Sproud announced its certification in August 2025. It is external confirmation of the company’s standards, not only a brand claim.
Who awards B Corp certification?
B Corp certification is run by the organisation B Lab. The assessment covers not only the product, but how the whole company operates – Sproud was assessed on areas including its approach to the environment, workers, community, customers and governance.
Does B Corp mean that a company is fully sustainable?
No. B Corp is not a claim of perfection. The certification sets standards, requires verification and creates a framework for further work on the company’s impact. That is why it is best seen as a tool for responsibility and transparency, not as an “eco” label.
What are Sproud drinks made from?
Sproud drinks are based on yellow pea protein. For coffee, the Barista versions are especially useful: they are designed for foaming and for pairing with espresso, so the plant-based drink keeps a creamy texture without dominating the taste of the coffee.
Does Sproud publish data about its climate impact?
Yes. The brand communicates its climate footprint using CarbonCloud calculations and also publishes the data in its impact reports. This makes it possible to look at environmental claims through concrete measurements, not only marketing slogans.
Does B Corp certification affect the taste or foaming of Sproud?
The certification is about how the company operates and its impact, not about the sensory qualities of a specific drink. Taste, creaminess and foam quality depend on the product recipe and the foaming technique – B Corp gives you a different kind of information: what stands behind the brand you choose.
Why does B Corp certification matter when choosing a drink for coffee?
Because, beyond taste and performance, it gives you an additional point of reference about how the business is run. If you care not only about how products behave in the cup, but also about a brand’s transparency and its approach to social and environmental impact, the certification makes these aspects easier to assess.
