Dried fruit, florals and caramel sweetness

It starts with the aroma of dried forest berries and delicate florals. Then comes a deep caramel sweetness reminiscent of toffee, lingering pleasantly in the cup. Ethiopia Aricha has everything we were looking for in an autumn espresso: plenty of fruit, but in a riper, more concentrated form, expressive aromatics and a sweetness that keeps you coming back for another sip. The natural process gives the coffee a full, intense character, while the floral notes retain the lightness typical of coffees from Yirgacheffe. It’s a coffee that smoothly takes us from summer into autumn — dried fruit replaces fresh berries, wrapped in a comforting sweetness of toffee.

Ethiopia Aricha Fall Espresso specialty coffee by JAVA Coffee Roasters with a cup of espresso surrounded by autumn leaves.

This is an espresso for that moment when summer is coming to an end, but we still want a little fruit in the cup. Dried rather than fresh, with a floral accent and a deeper caramel sweetness.

And that’s exactly why Aricha became our Fall Espresso.

Aricha processing station in Edido, Yirgacheffe region, Ethiopia

Eight kilometres from the town of Yirgacheffe, in the small village of Edido, lies the Aricha washing station. Coffee in this region is grown mainly by smallholder farmers on small plots at elevations of 1,850–1,880 m a.s.l. Ripe coffee cherries are delivered to Aricha, where they are sorted, weighed and combined into lots from multiple local farmers. As a result, the coffee cannot be traced back to a single farm or producer, but represents the work and harvests of the wider Edido community and surrounding area.

Hand-sorting of coffee cherries at the Aricha station

The coffee was processed using the natural method. After harvesting, the cherries are sorted for ripeness and quality, cleaned, then dried whole on raised beds and regularly turned to ensure even drying. The process takes an average of 8 to 25 days, depending on weather conditions. The lot consists of local Ethiopian heirloom varieties, grown at elevations of 1,850–1,880 m a.s.l. It is a blend of native varieties characteristic of Ethiopia rather than a single identifiable botanical variety.

Aricha is an espresso with a fruity, floral and distinctly sweet character. At the forefront are dried forest berries – ripe and concentrated – accompanied by delicate floral notes that add lightness and aromatic complexity. The importer identifies dried blueberry, fresh lavender and mellow wine-like acidity in this lot. The profile is rounded off by a caramel sweetness reminiscent of toffee.

The natural process enhances the coffee’s fruity character, while the combination of dried berries, florals and caramel perfectly captures the transition from late summer into early autumn – exactly the mood of Fall Espresso.
