Moka Pot

The moka pot was invented in 1933, as you might guess, by an Italian—Alfonso Bialetti. The first coffee maker of this type was made of aluminum, and to this day, many moka pots available on the market are also aluminum models. However, with the advent of induction cooktops in our kitchens, there was a need to create a coffee brewing device made from ferromagnetic materials, such as steel.

Which Moka Pot to Choose for Brewing Coffee - Stainless Steel or Aluminum?

The Moka pot for brewing coffee can be made from aluminum or stainless steel. Both options have their pros and cons. However, if you use an induction cooktop at home, an aluminum model will be useless, as this material is not ferromagnetic. It’s also worth noting that Italian companies today produce not only aluminum models but also stainless steel ones. In our JAVA Coffee roastery, you can find such products from the GIANNINI brand, manufactured in Italy. If you want to learn more about them, check out the product information on the website or contact us!

Aluminum

The "original" moka pot is considered to be the aluminum one, which remains the most popular. Since the first Italian espresso machine, it has been appreciated for how quickly it brings water to a boil, preventing the coffee from "burning" during the brewing process. The advantages of such a vessel also include its low price and lightweight. However, these advantages end here, as aluminum wears out quickly, even during cleaning, and is prone to limescale buildup. Additionally, this material requires immediate cleaning and drying after each use. There is also the controversial issue of metal particles potentially leaching into the water during brewing. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, this type of coffee maker cannot be used on modern induction cooktops.

Steel

The use of stainless steel in the production of moka pots has practically eliminated all the key disadvantages of aluminum models. These vessels do not release toxic metals during brewing, are resistant to damage, and are easy to clean. Although they heat up a bit slower than aluminum ones, the fact that they can be used on an induction cooktop easily neutralizes this issue. A good quality stainless steel model is not only practical and durable but also visually appealing. The products offered in our store also feature unique design elements, such as a handle-integrated opening mechanism that replaces the traditional screw-on design, and the option to reduce capacity.

Which Coffee to Choose for Brewing in an Italian Stainless Steel Moka Pot?

The stainless steel moka pot available at JAVA Coffee is a vessel in which you can brew truly delicious coffee in a genuine Italian style. However, the accessory alone won’t guarantee that the brewed coffee will be aromatic and rich in flavor. You also need to choose the right base, i.e., the coffee itself. Since brewing in a moka pot operates similarly to espresso machines, under pressure in just a few seconds, dark-roasted coffee is also recommended for moka pots. Its bold flavor will be released even in such a short time. If you’re looking for a coffee that is delicate yet complex in flavor, with chocolate notes or nuts, opt for 100% Arabica specialty-grade coffee. Why?

Why Is Specialty-Grade Arabica the Best?

Specialty-grade coffee represents only a small percentage of all beans available on the market. This coffee is sourced from various parts of the world, including Honduras, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, and Guatemala. However, what’s more important is that the beans come from small, verified farms where cultivation is done in a traditional and sustainable manner. Hand harvesting ensures that only ripe fruits are processed, and the high elevation of the crops indicates that these are top-quality beans. Before the beans are roasted in the oven, they undergo a selection process to pick only the perfect ones—without any defects. Then, the coffee is examined under the watchful eyes of coffee experts, and only after receiving a score of at least 80/100 can it proudly bear the title of specialty coffee. In our roastery, you will find moka pot coffee with various sensory profiles, featuring distinct sweet notes of fruits, nuts, and chocolate. It is the complex, incredibly rich flavor of 100% Arabica specialty-grade coffee that allows you to brew coffee with notes of strawberry, rhubarb, dried plum, apricot, berries, marzipan, or dark chocolate.

Want to try coffee from a moka pot but don’t know how to prepare it according to Italian recipes? Trust us! In our roastery, you’ll find both top-quality coffee brewing accessories and the right 100% Arabica beans for this brewing method.
