A Few Words About the Farm:

The beans of our new Kenya come from the Thimu farm, located on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya in the Kirinyaga District. Coffee trees grow here on fertile volcanic soils at altitudes of up to 1,800 meters above sea level. The ripe cherries are hand-picked, washed, and undergo a short fermentation process using water from a nearby river. After the final cleaning, the beans are dried on raised screens known as "African beds" until they reach the right moisture level.

Baragwi FCS is the largest farmers' association in Kenya, currently managing 12 mills and working with over 15,000 members. Factory managers rotate between mills every two years, sharing knowledge and maintaining consistent work standards. The cooperative, founded in October 1953, aims to support the social and economic interests of its members. The organization now employs over 140 people, of whom 31 are women. Farmers receive support in farm management, helping them increase productivity and crop quality. Services include weeding, pruning, spraying, fertilizing, mulching, and technical advice. Additionally, farmers can purchase production inputs on credit through Baragwi Cooperative, which is crucial for some farms.

Thimu Factory Farm

* The word “THIMU” means proverbs. In the Kikuyu region, women were known for working by hand and managing the household, while men were the planners and typically did not engage in heavy labor. Regularly, due to idleness, they gathered at the place where the Thimu factory is located today, spending the day learning Kikuyu proverbs from the older generation. In ancient times, it was believed that the more proverbs you knew, the wiser you were, so it was natural that they spent a lot of time on this activity.
