Kamajumba Farm and Kivubelt Coffee History

Kamajumba is a 9-hectare farm located on a peninsula on Lake Kivu. It hosts about 18,000 coffee shrubs, most of which are varieties producing specialty-grade beans. The volcanic soil and the humid equatorial mist, a daily presence on the shores of Lake Kivu, contribute to the coffee ripening with an exceptionally vibrant and intense flavor.

Kivubelt Coffee, which owns the Kamajumba farm, was founded in 2011 by Furahy Umwizeye Teuscher of Teuscher Invest. After acquiring over 200 acres of land in Gihombo, they planted more than 90,000 coffee trees, established several washing stations in the surrounding districts, and formed partnerships with over 200 farmers.

Kivubelt Farm Social Initiatives

Saving systems, financial training programs, and health insurance are just a few of the efforts Kivubelt undertakes for the benefit of its employees. Another important initiative is the training programs for women, organized after the processing season. These programs teach them how to make products such as baskets, tablecloths, and bags, allowing them to earn extra income even during the off-season.

Eliyana Uwayisaba has been working on the farm since 2011.

Another crucial off-season source of income for workers in this sector is fishing. Lake Kivu is home to various species of fish, including tilapia, catfish, and sambaza.
